An organization ran a video series titled “Healing Parent and Adult Child Relationships.” This donation page includes a premium incentive: donors who give $30 or more will receive a copy of the book featured in the video series, written by the guest speaker.
At the time of this test, the donation page featured a $50 “popular” gift amount, even though the premium threshold was $30. This created a potential mismatch between what donors were being told and what the page implicitly suggested was the most appropriate gift.
We identified this as a possible source of friction before considering a GOAA (gift of any amount) test for this same page, so we wanted to address this misalignment first. If donors notice this misalignment when they intend to receive the premium, they might question whether $30 is truly sufficient or feel uncertain about the expected amount.
This ran as a split-url test on the donation page, with a 50 – 50 traffic split.
The control noted $50 as the most popular gift amount, while the treatment noted $30. No copy, imagery, or premium messaging was changed. Most visitors arrived at this page from meta advertising with strong messaging about the importance of reconnecting with your child before it’s too late.
Research Question
We believe that lowering the recommended gift amount from $50 to $30 for visitors to the “Healing Parent and Adult Child Relationships” content offer donation page will increase donation conversion rates because a lower default ask reduces psychological pressure, making it easier for more people to say yes.

Key Learnings
Aligning the suggested gift amount with the $30 premium threshold significantly decreased the donation conversion rate, resulting in 66% fewer donors compared to the control. This outcome was statistically significant at 99.9% confidence, indicating a clear and meaningful negative impact. Though the gift array appeared misaligned with the premium ask, the data suggests it served as a strong value and intent signal. Even with a $30 premium clearly stated elsewhere on the page, the higher default likely:
- Anchored donors to a more serious level of commitment
- Reinforced the perceived value of the content
- Reduced ambiguity about what constituted a meaningful gift
By shifting the default to $30, the page may have unintentionally reframed the experience as more transactional (giving to get the book) rather than mission-driven (giving to support their work), weakening donor motivation. This result highlights that clarity is not always the primary driver of motivation. In some contexts, the donor may be able to ignore small inconsistencies if the overall framing of the donation ask signals strong importance and impact. For future testing, we should keep in mind the type of content we are testing on. For emotionally resonant or mission-driven content, a higher default may increase confidence and commitment, rather than deter giving. If audiences are sufficiently compelled by the offer's messaging, lowering the barrier may not be the best approach.
