How Does a Monthly Ask Influence Recurring Donor Conversion?

Human Coalition running a Facebook fundraising campaign built around a clear and compelling $26 one-time donation ask. This ad is one of our strongest performers, driven by a message that invites donors to step into a moment of urgent need and provide immediate, compassionate support.

While this approach is effective at generating initial gifts, we want to better understand how to increase long-term donor value from this traffic. Specifically, we are exploring whether donors who respond to this type of urgent, emotionally resonant appeal are open to making an ongoing commitment (monthly gift) rather than a one-time gift.

To test this, we ran a split URL experiment on the donation experience following the ad click. All users see the same Facebook ad and $26 framing, but are randomly directed to one of two landing page experiences:

Control: A standard donation page focused on a one-time gift
Treatment: A modified donation page that clearly and prominently asks for a monthly recurring gift, with language intentionally adapted to remove ambiguity and reinforce the ongoing nature of the commitment

This test is designed to isolate whether reframing the post-click experience, from a single act of giving to a sustained monthly impact, changes how donors choose to give.

At its core, this experiment explores a key motivational question: When someone is moved to act in a moment of urgency, are they more likely to give once—or to commit to ongoing support when that path is made clear?

Research Question

We believe that presenting a clear monthly giving ask to donors arriving from an urgency-driven Facebook ad will increase recurring conversion and long-term value because framing the gift as ongoing support encourages deeper commitment than a one-time ask.

This experiment has a required sample size of 1,306 in order to be valid. Since the experiment had a total sample size of 2,315, and the level of confidence is not above 95% the experiment results are not valid.

Key Learnings

This test did not reach statistical significance (93.5% confidence); however, the directional results provide meaningful insight into donor behavior.

The monthly-first experience increased recurring gift conversion from 0.86% to 1.7% (+100.5% relative lift). On its own, this suggests that when donors are explicitly and clearly asked to give monthly, more of them will choose to do so. The treatment successfully surfaced and captured latent willingness among a subset of donors to commit to ongoing support.

However, this increase came from a relatively small base and did not translate into enough total recurring volume to outweigh declines in overall conversion. This indicates that while the ask itself is effective at shifting behavior for some donors, the broader audience arriving from this ad is not primarily motivated by a recurring commitment.

Secondary Metrics

1. Overall Conversion Rate (Transactions)

Control: 10.87%
Treatment: 7.01%

The treatment saw a significant drop in overall conversion rate. This indicates that introducing a monthly-first ask created friction at the point of decision, reducing the likelihood that donors would complete any gift.

2. One-Time Donations

Control: 9.66%
Treatment: 5.28%

One-time giving declined sharply in the treatment. This is a critical driver of overall performance loss and suggests that the monthly framing may have interrupted donor momentum rather than redirecting it.

3. Revenue & Value per Visitor

Control: $5,220.50 total | $4.50 per visitor
Treatment: $3,385.50 total | $2.93 per visitor

Revenue followed the same pattern as conversion rate. The lower value per visitor confirms that the monthly ask did not generate enough higher-value gifts to compensate for reduced participation.

Reviewing all metrics together:

The monthly ask works for a subset of donors (as seen in the lift in recurring conversion), but reduces participation across the broader audience
There is a clear tradeoff between commitment and conversion: increasing upfront commitment decreases the number of people willing to act
The ad creates a moment of urgency and simplicity (“give $26 now”), and the monthly ask introduces cognitive and emotional friction that disrupts that momentum
Directional consistency across metrics increases confidence in the insight, despite not reaching 95% statistical significance
