Timeframe: 03/29/2025 - 04/25/2025

This experiment was conducted for WUNC, a public radio station serving North Carolina, to evaluate whether simplified, headline-style ad creative would outperform more complex designs in Meta ads for donor acquisition. The test was inspired by recent behavioral research from the Journal of Consumer Research that found simple, minimalist advertising often outperforms complex designs. While more detailed ads may be perceived as higher effort, simplicity allows messages to be processed more fluently and emotionally, leading to higher engagement.

Research Question

We believed that simplified, headline-style ad creative with a clear call to action would outperform a more visually complex layout in generating donations. The assumption was that complexity could reduce persuasive impact in mission-driven creative by requiring more cognitive effort to understand.
