How a pop up to prompt site follows performs against a full page interruption

Experiment Summary
Timeframe: 04/19/2023 - 04/29/2023
CaringBridge had previously implemented a full page, purple interrupter that prompts the user to follow the author’s site. We noticed a decrease in donations at the time and hypothesized that this new feature was the culprit. While the call to action on this interrupter is for site follows, it shows up on a page that generates a lot of gifts. To confirm our hypothesis we ran this as an A/B test where the control was the regular pop up for site follows and the treatment was the “purple curtain” pop up.
Research Question
We believe that the full site interrupter for site visitors will achieve a decrease in both site creations and donations because the full purple curtain seems much more disruptive to the person’s site experience.

This experiment has a required sample size of 2,555 in order to be valid. Since the experiment had a total sample size of 118,293, and the level of confidence is above 95% the experiment results are valid.
Flux Metrics Affected
The Flux Metrics analyze the three primary metrics that affect revenue (traffic, conversion rate, and average gift). This experiment produced the following results:
0% increase in traffic
× 16.5% decrease in conversion rate
× 0% increase in average gift
Key Learnings
The A/B experiment conducted by Caringbridge revealed that the full page site interrupter for site visitors decreased the site follows by 16.5%. The statistical level of confidence was 100%, indicating that the control won. Moreover, the experiment resulted in a directional 64% increase in donations with a level of confidence of 87%. However, when drilling down to where these gifts are coming from we actually found that the donations had a split code that was completely unrelated to this test experience.
The key learning from this experiment is that full-site interrupters could be disruptive to user experience, leading to a reduction in site creation and potentially donations.
